More about Max.
Max, also known as Maxwell Smart, or
Maxwell "not-so" Smart, is his own little personality. He's
a real people dog and is especially attracted to kids. Max is about
as "cuddly" as a Brittany can be. He is a bouncy, bright,
and boisterous pup. He's an absolute joy to train because he loves
affection and learns so quickly just by a pat on the flank.
Max doesn't chew or eat things instead
he's a carrier of things. Leave it in one spot and
it's moved to another. He especially likes to tell you it's
dinnertime by flinging his bowl down the hall, causing quite the
racket. Max is also a great jumper and has been known to jump onto
your lap, or into the bathtub or shower without warning. He always
wants to be near people.
In the field he's a demon. I don't think
he has quite the same nose as Dallas, but he covers ground like you
would not believe, and does a very decent job at finding birds. He's
still young (18 months) so he will develop. At the fall BC Field
Trial (2004) he won open puppy, beating a number of good dogs that
were older. One of the judges said he had actually ranged better than
some of the all-age dogs that had run earlier. Quite a compliment.
Max also loves the water, especially
water retrieves. He'll fetch sticks or rubber Kong's
all day long. In the boat he stands next to Dallas at the bow
enjoying the scents. He also likes to jump off the dock into the
water making a big splash, where Dallas prefers to wade in.
Being male, Max is about 4 kgm heavier
than Dallas is, so he wins the tug-of war games and when they bounce
each other around he usually ends up on top. The two of them yip and
snarl and do that playful growling stuff as they run around the field
behind our house. It's better exercise than I can give them.
I'm looking forward to a lot of field
trial and field test work with Max this year. I made a few common
mistakes in training Dallas, and I think I can avoid them with this
boy. I'll keep sending Lori pictures as he develops. I'm sure they
will appear on the website so you can follow along. He's just learned
to back and is steady to wing and shot. Next up is the retrieve. |
